History
According to legend, while on a hunting trip, President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a captive bear. The story was popularized in a political cartoon, and Morris and Rose Michtom made a stuffed bear in honor of the tale. The bear, like the cartoon, was cute and cuddly, and achieved instant popularity. At the same time, the Steiff company created a bear, which also sold well. The Gund company came into being at this time, pouncing on the craze. Unlike fads such as Cabbage Patch Kids or My Little Pony, the teddy bear became perennially popular. -
