The Teamsters is one of the largest labor unions in America with more than 1.4 million dues paying members. The union was founded in 1903 and was named after teamsters, who were originally workers who delivered goods by horse-drawn carriage. Currently, the Teamsters represent truck drivers, warehouse workers, and dairy employees. The Teamsters Union endorsed Barack Obama for president in the primary season.

History
Teamster membership expanded rapidly after World War II and extended membership to a variety of other trades. In the 1960's, the union was tainted by close ties to organized crime, and the union's leader Jimmy Hoffa was imprisoned for witness tampering in 1964. Membership in the union has dwindled since the 1980s when deregulation of the trucking industry started to take effect.2008 Election
In 2008, the union decided to back the candidacy of Barack Obama over Democratic rival Hillary Rodham Clinton. The Teamsters have donated the vast majority of dues to the Democratic Party in recent elections.
