Pyatt was drafted eighth overall by the New York Islanders during the 1999 NHL Entry Draft. After finishing his final season with the Ontario Hockey League's Sudbury Wolves, Pyatt joined the Islanders at training camp, made the final cut, and was invited to play the full season in the NHL. During his rookie season, Pyatt scored 4 goals and assisted on another 14 in 78 games.

During the off-season, Pyatt was traded to the Buffalo Sabres and split the 2001-2002 season between the National and American Hockey Leagues. The next season saw Pyatt as a regular member of the Sabres' roster for the next four seasons, although he would travel to Sweden to play during the locked out 2004-2005 season.

During the off-season, in July of 2006, Pyatt was traded to the Vancouver Canucks. He was placed on the top line with twins Henrik and Daniel Sedin, where he earned a career high of 37 points during each of the next two consecutive seasons.
