"Musicolio," Tay Zonday
Tay Zonday released his song "Musicolio" as a free mp3 download on March 22, 2010. It was his first new song upload in several months since the Christmas season.
Tay Zonday is an Internet personality and musician best known for the video to his original composition, "Chocolate Rain." The song lyrics, a commentary on race relations, were cryptic and strange, and the peculiarity of the video was highlighted by Zonday's erratic, idiosyncratic performance. (He would periodically lean back from the microphone in order to breath, and uses a deep baritone on the vocals).
The song initially became popular on the Internet forum 4chan before gaining a wider audience on blogs such as Best Week Ever, radio shows such as The Opie and Anthony Show and guest TV appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live and the Weezer music video for the song "Pork and Beans". Zonday used his newfound fame to arrange some sponsored and promotional appearances as well, including a featured role in the Vizio Super Bowl Ad starring Beyonce Knowles and a campaign to promote Cherry Chocolate Diet Dr. Pepper.
Zonday remains active on his YouTube channel, where he continues to release new music. In March 22, 2010, he released a new song to promote his friend's website, Musicolio.com.
Biography
Zonday was born Adam Nyerere Bahner and says he chose his stage name because there were no results for it when typed into a search engine. (Some have suggested the name is an anagram of the phrase "zany today.") He is of European and African descent originally, and studied as a graduate student at the University of Minnesota. He currently resides in Los Angeles, California.
References to Zonday and his music have become common in popular culture. In adition to references to his work on The Office, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and 30 Rock, a likeness of the singer appeared on the Comedy Central hit show South Park and the singer appeared in the video for the Weezer single "Pork and Beans." Zonday's music has been references in songs by John Mayer and Green Day. He has also provided a character voice on the TV sketch series Robot Chicken.
