Tartar Sauce

Tartar sauce is a thick white sauce traditionally used as a condiment for fish and chips and steak tartare. Its main ingredients are mayonnaise, pickled cucumbers, onions, parsley and capers. It is named after the French dish it was originally served with.

Don't Confuse It With...

Tartar sauce should not be confused with cream of tartar (a powder used as a leavening agent). It is not related to the tartar that accumulates on teeth.
