History

George D. Dayton created the Dayton Dry Good Company in Minneapolis in 1902 which would eventually become the Target Corporation. In 1962, the first Target store opened its doors. The Dayton Company went public in 1967 and the signature bull’s eye logo was created a year later. Target introduced standardized store layouts in 1974 and acquired Mervyn’s in 1978. In 1987, Target added electronic scanned checkout to all of its stores. Recent changes in the company include the first SuperTarget opened in 1995 and launching Target.com in 1999. SuperTarget stores combine grocery shopping with Target’s regular assortment of goods.
