Tampons

A Tampon is a round cotton or rayon plug placed in the vagina during the woman's period to soak up menstrual blood. They often come with a plastic or cardboard applicator to aid in insertion and a string to aid in removal. They are often chosen over menstrual pads because they are not visible under tight clothing and more comfortable in swimming. They also carry health risks including toxic shock syndrome.

Fast Facts:

  1. Dr. Earle C. Haas invented the tampon with the applicator
  2. In 1933 he sold the patent to Gertrude Tenderich
  3. Tenderich founded Tampax
  4. These were first sold in the US in 1936
  5. Not changing the tampon often has been associated with toxic shock syndrome
  6. A tampon should not be kept in for more than 4-8 hours or overnight
  7. Tampons are used by up to seventy percent of women in the US
