In 2008, the Tampa Bay Rays made their first ever post season appearance, which led to their first World Series appearance. In the series the Rays lost to the National league champion Philadelphia Phillies. The series lasted five games with the Phillies win four of five.
Led by second year manager Joe Maddon, the Rays shocked the Major League Baseball world by making the playoffs with a group of young and relatively unknown players.
The Rays play the Chicago White Sox in the 2008 American league division series. The winner faces the winner of the Angels vs. the Red Sox Series in the American League Championship.
The Tampa Bay Rays offense was led by young sluggers such as Evan Longoria, as well as a mix of older veterans such as Carlos Pena, Dan Johnson, Cliff Floyd, Akinori Iwamura, and Carl Crawford.
The Rays starting pitching includes Scott Kazmir, Edwin Jackson, James Shields, Andy Sonnanstine and Matt Garza.
