A Tamagotchi is a virtual pet that is housed in an egg-shaped computer. There are three buttons that allow the user to play games, feed, clean up and check the health and happiness of their pet. According to Bandai, the name is a portmanteau combining the Japanese word tamago, meaning "egg", and the English word "watch". In Japan, the toys are sold under the name "Tamagotch".
Versions
Bandai has released a total of 41 versions of the Tamagotchi as of March 2008. Two additional versions have been announced to be released by July 2008. The versions include the original, Christmas-themed, Connection, Connexion and Plus. The newest version is 5, which allows users to raise an entire family. Newer versions can communicate with other Tamagotchi's, allowing them to play games and breed.
