The United Nations reported on October 28, 2009 that a Taliban attack on one of the UN guest houses resulted in 12 deaths (of which 6 were UN employees) and 9 injured. The attack happened early in the morning, and was performed by three armed attackers with suicide vests, who also set the roof of the building on fire, leading to an hour and a half long shootout with local security forces. The attackers died in the incident, without being able to detonate their vests.http://www.news24.com/Content/World/News/1073/ddbabf613cc04d158f3e60f14af5fe7b/28-10-2009-09-45/Attackers_targeted_UN_staffhttp://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-afghan-deaths28-2009oct28,0,6008774.storyaliban Attack UN Guest House
The attack was later claimed by Taliban through their spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid as an early warning against anyone involved in the second round of the November 7 Aghanistan election, and that this attack is 'the beginning of many of such attacks'.http://www.news24.com/Content/World/News/1073/ddbabf613cc04d158f3e60f14af5fe7b/28-10-2009-09-45/Attackers_targeted_UN_staff
History
The Taliban attack follows after a month of increased tension in Afghanistan with much intense discussions on fraudulent Afghanistan Elections, and happened less than 24 hours after the announcement that October was the month with the highest death toll on US troops since the start of the Afghanistan war. During these times, the US and other coalition forces have to decide whether to increase their troop presence in Afghanistan, a decision US President Barack Obama is expected to announce in the next few weeks.http://www.news24.com/Content/World/News/1073/ddbabf613cc04d158f3e60f14af5fe7b/28-10-2009-09-45/Attackers_targeted_UN_staffhttp://www2.timesdispatch.com/rtd/news/world/article/AFGH281_20091027-234202/302064/
