  • Tales of the Black Freighter Synopsis

In the Watchmen graphic novel a young African-American boy is reading the Tales of the Black Freighter comic book. The story he reads in the comic is called Marooned. In the story, a character referred to as the Mariner is adrift at sea. His main goal is to race home to protect his family and hometown from the evil and brutal Black Freighter pirate ship. Throughout his journey he stops at nothing to reach home, including using the bodies of his dead shipmates to make a raft, and killing innocent people who stand in his way. Does his brutality justify his mission? Or do his actions make the Mariner become the very thing that he is protecting his family and friends from? Watchmen Wikia: Tales of the Black Freighter
