Taiwanese

  • Taiwanese, also referred to as Minnan or Hokkien, is one of the primary spoken languages in Taiwan. It is a dialect of Chinese, and though Chinese characters are used to transcribe it, Taiwanese has no written form. Taiwanese is taught to children in Taiwan, but the language is now primarily used by older generations, particularly in rural areas. For younger people, especially those living in and around large cities, Mandarin is the dominant Chinese dialect.
