The Olympics are held every four years and involve countries of the world competing in various sporting events. Games are held during the summer months, with an organizing committee determining host locations. The original Olympic Games were held in Ancient Greece from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D. The modern games were established in 1896 by the International Olympic Committee. The first Winter Olympics were held in 1924, and then were staggered in 1994 so that there is one set of Olympic games, summer or winter, alternating every two years.

The Summer Olympics are most commonly referred to as "the Olympics," although they are also called "the Olympic Games" or simply "the Games."
