Syracuse University is a private university that grants both undergraduate and graduate degrees. It is a member of the Big East Athletic Conference. The university stemmed from the Methodist Episcopal tradition, but has been nonsectarian since 1920. The University's medical school was founded two years after the 1870 charter went into effect.

Syracuse University's sports teams are known as the Orange and their mascot is Otto the Orange. They belong to the NCAA Division 1 in the Big East Conference. Syracuse has a domed stadium called the Carrier Dome which has housed their football team since 1980.
