• The Syracuse University football team plays college football as a member of the Big East Conference. The school won a national championship in 1959, and one player in school history, Ernie Davis, was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1961. The team plays home games in their on-campus facility, the Carrier Dome.

  Among the great players in Syracuse history include the player many call the greatest in National Football League history, Jim Brown. Others include Donovan McNabb, John Mackey, Marvin Harrison, Art Monk, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little, Donovan Darius, Dwight Freeney and Joe Morris. Perhaps the high mark in recent years came in 1987, when they went 11-0 under head coach Dick MacPherson. The program saw a re-birth under both MacPherson and Paul Pasqualoni, who took when MacPherson took a job with the New England Patriots.
