During the trial, both Ahmed's sister and father said he was exploring his Muslim religion during his travels in 2005. However prosecutors claim that in March 2005, Ahmed and Ehsanul Islam Sadequee traveled from Atlanta to Canada to discuss potential U.S. attack sites, which may have included oil refineries, a military base and a GPS satellite system.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert McBurney said Ahmed also make "casting videos" of Washington D.C. landmarks, the Capitol, the World Bank building and a Masonic Temple, during an April 2005 trip.CNN: Ex-Georgia Tech student convicted on terrorism charge (June 10, 2009)

Then, during the summer of 2005, Ahmed traveled to Pakistan. He had been considering joining a terrorist training camp but he changed his mind and decided to re-enrolling at Georgia Tech.

Ahmed was indicted on terrorism charges in March 2006. During his closing arguments in Ahmed's 2009 trial, Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert McBurney said, "The case is not about throwing bombs and shooting soldiers but providing support for those activities. The whole point is to get the terrorist before he gets to flight school and figures out how to fly a commercial airliner."CNN: Ex-Georgia Tech student convicted on terrorism charge (June 10, 2009)
