History
In 1788, a fleet of eleven ships containing British convicts and officials led by Arthur Phillip landed in what is now Sydney Cove, establishing the first European colony in Australia. The cove was named in honor of British Secretary of State, Thomas Townshend, Baron Sydney. The area had previously been inhabited by Australian Aborigines for an estimated 50,000 years.
