Swordtails

Swordtails are freshwater live bearing tropical fish popular among fishkeepers. Native to Central America, the species is characterized by the long sword like extension on the tails of the males. The females are larger and rounder with a fan-like tail. Selective breeding has produced a wide variety of color and fin shapes. Swordtails have been known to interbreed with their close relatives, platies, to produce hybrids.

Swordtails are omnivorous, generally peaceful and have been kept successfully in community tanks. Because they breed prolifically and bear large, self sufficient young, they are a popular choice for amateur fish breeders.
