• Sweeney Todd is a 2007 film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's classic musical, that is directed by Tim Burton and stars Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen.

    The plot of Sweeney Todd revolves around a barber named Benjamin Barker (Johnny Depp) who is unjustly imprisoned by the evil Judge Turpin (Alan Rickman) because the judge is in love with Barker's wife. Barker escapes from prison and returns to England under the name "Sweeney Todd". Todd rents out his old flat above "Mrs. Lovett's" (played by Helena Bonham Carter) failing meat pie store, and plots his revenge. Todd and Mrs Lovett soon go into cahoots, and arrange it so that after he kills his victims, she cooks them into her pies and sells them.

    In 2008, Dante Ferretti and Francesa Lo Schiavo won the Best Art Direction Oscar for their work on the film. Sweeney Todd also picked up two Golden Globe Awrds that year, one for Best Picture (musical or comedy) and one for Best Actor, which went to Johnny Depp.
