  • Materials

A sweater can be made of wool, cotton, cashmere or other synthetic fibers.

Cashmere sweaters are made from the undercoat of a goat. It takes four years for a goat to produce enough cashmere for a sweater so these sweaters can be expensive. They are very soft and often fashionable.

Wool sweaters are made from the wool of a sheep and are warmer than cotton sweaters. They are also better at wicking away the moisture from the body. They are more expensive than cotton or synthetic fibers.

Cotton sweaters are light and absorb moisture from the body. The evaporation of the moisture and breathable material can be cooling, so it is best to wear cotton sweaters in cool weather rather than in the winter.

Synthetic fiber sweater are the cheapest sweaters and provide some of the advantages of wool without the cost.

  • Care

Unless the care instructions on your sweater say otherwise, always wash sweaters by hand. While washing don't wring the sweater but let it soak for five to ten minutes and then wash it by gently kneading it. Use a mild detergent or hand soap.

After it is washed rinse it with the same motion and then roll it in a towel to dry. After the towel has absorbed most of the moisture lay the sweater flat so that it retains it shape.

Don't hang sweaters; they will take the shape of the hanger with time. Instead fold them into a drawer.

Regularly remove lint and hair with a lint roller.

To keep moths away use moth or ceder balls and always wash the sweaters before storing them.
