Swamp Thing was an American comic book series featuring the character of the same name.

Origin
Scientist Alec Holland invented a restorative chemical that could turn bare land into lush forests. Mysterious agents who wanted the formula planted a bomb in Holland's lab. Although the resulting explosion nearly killed Holland, he somehow managed to escape. Drenched in chemicals, Holland became the Swamp Thing after accidentally falling into a nearby swamp. When writer Alan Moore reimagined the series in 1984, he killed off Holland's character completely. The Swamp Thing was instead the chemical reincarnation of Holland--a plantlike entity that maintained Holland's memory and character while protecting the environment from all sorts of threats.
