Superman Returns is supposed to take place five years after 1980's Superman II. In those five years, Superman went missing from Metropolis, and the city learned to progress without him.His return is met with hostility from Lois Lane (Kate Bosworth), who has since been engaged and had a child (who was hinted to also be Superman's in the film).
Lex Luthor (Kevin Spacey), released from prison in Superman's absence, meanwhile plots to create a new landmass that would threaten Metropolis and the rest of the world. Superman saves the day at the end, and assures Lois and everyone else that he is here to stay.
