Super Smash Bros. Melee is the sequel to Super Smash Bros. The game lets up to four players engage in battles between classic Nintendo characters. With its various modes and unlimited types of ways to play the game, it is considered by many as one of the greatest Nintendo GameCube games of all time.
Gameplay
All characters are equipped with the same button sequence. "A" is the regular-attack button, and "B" is the special attack button. The move sequences change as the player moves on the directional pad. Although all characters have the same button sequence, the difference comes in what the character does with the A and B attacks.
Game modes
There are several different features in the game. Among them:
- Melee/Survival Mode: Players must prevent their opponent from coming back to the stage. This can be done by knocking them out, or blocking their way of returning to the platform. In a timed Melee match, players win by earning the most knockouts without self-destructing. In a stock match, players win by eliminating all of their opponent's stock.
- Adventure Mode: Players go through several stages facing different types of opponents. The opposition ranges from a regular character to a character that has a special ability (metal, large sized, etc.). The final match involves a large hand (or two) that the player must defeat to win the game.
- Break the Targets: A player must eliminate all 10 targets on the screen as fast as possible. The stage changes depending on the character used.
- Home Run Contest: A player's character is put on a stage with a sandbag and bat. The player must hit the sandbag forward as far as possible. A player has several seconds to hit the sandbag before knocking it away. The player does not have to use the bat, although it's recommended.
- Multi-man Melee: Several drones are placed on the stage, and the player must eliminate them. The drones will fight back. The tasks range from a timed event to a certain number of drones that must be eliminated.
