Progressing through the Game
- The progression of Super Mario Sunshine is different than any other Mario game.
- You do not need to get all of the shine sprites to beat the game. Instead, you simply need to finish episode 7 of every level.
- Many of the shines and all of the blue coins are simply optional.
- There are 120 total shines including the optional ones. There is no special ending, boss, or stage for collecting them all.
- This walkthrough focuses on the shines required to access the last level of the game. There are, however, strategies and locations for the remaining shines and blue coins.

Delfino Airstrip
- GameAnyone: Super Mario Sunshine - 01 Opening FMV, Go To Jail, Bianco Hills (Time: 18:24)
- Watch the opening movie. Strange colored paint has covered the island's pier.
- Run to the other side of the pier. Walk up to the water nozzle on the ground.
- TIP: Mario's special ability is jumping! Press A for a regular jump. If you jump three times in a row while running, Mario will jump gradually higher each time. This is great for reaching high places.
- Grab the water nozzle and watch the cutscene. The machine's name is Fludd.
- The game gives a short Fludd introduction. Press the R trigger to shoot water with Fludd. Pressing R lightly allows Mario to run while shooting water. Holding down R all the way down allows him to aim while standing still.
- TIP: If Fludd runs out, find a nearby water source and press R to refill him.
- Use Fludd to spray the two "M" graffiti marks on the nearby walls.
- Next go back toward Princess Peach. There is a large glob of paint near her. Spray it with Fludd a paint piranha will come out.
- Hold down R all the way to aim Fludd. Spray the plant right in the face to hurt him. After three hits he dies.
- You've earned your first shine! Run up and grab it.
- Watch the cutscene. Mario has been framed and his punishment is to clean the whole island.
-
Delfino Plaza
- GameAnyone: Super Mario Sunshine - 07 Delfino Plaza - Turbo Nozzle (Time: 13:19)
- GameAnyone: Super Mario Sunshine - 08 Delfino Plaza - Blue Coins Collection (Time: 12:04)
- This is the main HUB world of the game. From here you'll find all of the other levels.
- Run straight forward to find Princess Peach. She'll automatically start a conversation as you get close.
- To her right is a large puddle of brown paint. Spray the center of it with Fludd. This reveals another paint piranha.
- Defeat the paint piranha just like the last one. Shoot him 3 times in the head with Fludd while avoiding the little paint monsters. It's not very difficult.
- Watch the cutscene. Shadow Mario appears on a large statue and kidnaps Princess Peach.
- You have to catch Shadow Mario. Chase him down and spray him with Fludd. Run to the right to initially find him. Give chase while spraying water on him, eventually he'll drop Peach.
- Run back to the statue. A portal appears and Shadow Mario jumps inside.
- This is the gateway to the first world. Spray the "M" with Fludd and then jump inside to enter.

Episode 1: Road to the Big Windmill
- Run forward along the path. Eventually, you'll find a tight rope. Jump on it.
- TIP: Mario can elegantly walk around on the tight ropes. If you jump on a tight rope, you'll go extra high!
- Jump on the tight rope to reach a second rope a little higher up. Walk across the second rope to the little platform at the end.
- Press X to switch Fludd into hover mode.
- TIP: In hover mode, Fludd allows Mario to glide through the air a little bit by pressing R. You can only do it for a few seconds, so make them count!
- Use Fludd to hover over the nearby wall. On the other side is a lot of brown paint.
- Switch Fludd back to spray mode and jump down.
- Spray the brown paint to reveal a path. Continue along the path by spraying the brown paint as you go. There are some signs that will direct you on the correct way if you get lost.
- Dodge the piranha plant heads as they roll down the path. You can't kill them, so dodge!
- The path will lead you towards the windmill, but you won't be able to reach it.
- At the end of the path you'll find a paint blob. Spray it to reveal another paint piranha.
- Shoot the paint piranha three times in the face to kill it. You're reward is a shine sprite.
- After getting a shine you are automatically taken back to the HUB world. That's okay, just jump back into the portal to reach Bianca Hills again.
- TIP: At this point the way Ricco Harbor is open. It is the second world in the game. You can get shines in any order. If you want, skip ahead to the Ricco Harbor section. Just remember that you'll have to come back and finish Bianco Hills later. You must play every world up through Episode 7.
-
Episode 2: Down With Petey Piranha
- Run forward along the path to reach the tight rope.
- This time the door to the other side of the wall is open. Cross the tight rope and go to the other side.
- There is still brown paint here, but no rolling piranha heads.
- Return to where you killed for paint piranha for the first shine. The path to the windmill is now raised, so climb up the hill to reach a bridge.
- The bridge is broken. That's okay, there are some tight ropes on the side of it. Jump on the tight ropes and walk across.
- Jump onto the other side of the bridge. The path is narrow here, so be careful not to fall.
- Follow the path while spraying the paint. The path spirals up around a mountain and the windmill is at the top.
- Paint blobs fall from the sky so keep moving. Don't stay in any one place too long.
- Eventually, piranha heads start rolling down the path. Stick close to the wall to avoid them.
- When you reach the windmill, the path continues to spiral up the side of the structure itself. There are no enemies, but you'll be forced to make some tough jumps.
- Switch Fludd to hover mode.
- The first jump is pretty easy. Just use a regular jump.
- You'll need to jump and hover to make it over the second jump. Don't get too close to the wall or you'll grab onto it.
- The third jump is tricky. Some plant roots are blocking the way. Jump off of the path and hover around them to reach the other side.
- You've reached the end of the path.
- There is some graffiti on the wall here. Spray it to get a blue coin.
- TIP: Blue coins can be traded in for shines at the HUB world. You do not need to collect these to finish the game.
- Wait for a windmill propeller to come by and jump on it.
- When you reach the top you'll see Petey Piranha. Jump towards him to start a cutscene.
- Boss Fight: Petey Piranha
- This boss isn't too tough. Wait for him to open his mouth and then spray water in it. Petey pukes out paint if you wait too long.
- Petey's belly fills with water as you spray his mouth. Eventually he falls over. Jump on his stomach.
- While on his stomach, jump into the air and press L. This let's Mario butt stomp quickly to the ground.
- Butt stomp Petey's stomach to hurt him. Petey then knocks you off.
- Repeat this twice to kill Petey. He does not change his pattern. After 3 hits he dies and gives you a shine sprite.
-
Episode 3: The Hillside Cave Secret
- Walk down the path to reach the big wall. Go on the other side.
- Go to the hill that leads up to the windmill. You'll notice a little path to the left that leads back towards the big wall. Follow it.
- As you follow the path you'll notice some platforms and tight ropes just above the surface of the water. Get on the first tight rope.
- Follow the tight ropes to reach the other side.
- The last tight rope has an electric enemy that travels along it. Jump over it to avoid getting shocked.
- To reach the last platform you need to jump and hover with Fludd.
- From that platform, jump onto the nearby hill.
- On the hill, follow the signs to reach another tight rope. It appears too high to reach, but there is a little trick Mario can do.
- TIP: Mario can spin jump. Make a 360 motion with the joystick and then press the A button. Mario will spin and jump extremely high into the air. This is very useful for reaching high platforms.
- Spin jump onto the tight rope. Run into the cave to find a secret area.
- It's an obstacle course! Unfortunately, you don't get to use Fludd here. So make your jumps count! There are many sequences like this in the game.
- You need to run through the obstacle course and collect the shine at the end. Remember, you won't have flood to save you if you mess up a jump.
- Run forward and jump across the wooden blocks. Wait for them to be directly in front of you before jumping.
- TIP: Perspective can be everything in these challenges. Use the c-stick to manipulate the camera. Find the camera angle that is easiest for you. Try having it right behind Mario, panned to the side of Mario, or way up in the air looking down at Mario. There is no right way to have the camera, so take some time and figure out which way is easiest for you.
- TIP: While figuring out your camera preference, keep in mind that some jumps are easier when the camera above you.
- Next are wooden blocks that move in various directions. You can go across anywhere, but there is an easiest route. Go to the line of blocks that start at the far right corner of the initial green block you start on. These ones don't move too much.
- You're next challenge is to get across a green bridge without being knocked off by the huge blocks.
- Wait until the first huge block just passes over the bridge and make a run for it. Dodge the second block and the keep running to avoid the 3rd and 4th blocks.
- Now you need to jump across some spinning stars. Not too hard. There is a 1-up on the second star. Spin jump to get it.
- Just passed the stars is the shine sprite. Grab it!
-
Episode 4: Red Coins of Windmill Village
- In this chapter you must collect 8 red coins.
- Go along the path until you reach the first tight rope. To your left are some buildings.
- There are some tight ropes in between these two buildings. Jump onto the first one to get red coin #1.
- Next jump up to the second tight rope. Turn around and you'll see red coin #2 on the roof of one of the buildings. Walk across the tight rope and grab it.
- Face towards the big wall and jump onto the nearby platform. Cross the tight rope onto the big wall to find red coin #3.
- Run along the big wall towards the nearby hill. Further along the wall you'll find red coin #4. The path is narrow, so you can't miss it.
- Keep following the wall and it will curve up higher. There is some graffiti on the top of the wall. If you want a blue coin, spray it.
- As the wall curves, go right to find red coin #5.
- The wind monsters here will attack you. You can't kill, only dodge their attacks. Wait for them to rush at Mario and then jump to avoid them.
- From red coin #6, go across the nearby tight rope to reach another roof top. Jump over the electric current as it passes by. On the other side is red coin #5.
- There are some platforms sticking out of the mini-windmills nearby. You will see a red coin in the air between the two windmills. Jump onto windmill platform that is closest to the red coin.
- Grab red coin by jumping across to the other mini-windmill. This is red coin #7.
- Jump onto the nearby building. There are two towers sticking up out of it.
- TIP: Mario can wall jump. Jump onto a wall and Mario automatically starts sliding down the side of it. Press A to wall jump off.
- Here you need to wall jump in between the two towers. It's tricky, but you must learn how to do it to complete the game.
- At the top of the towers is red coin #8.
- Now that you have all of the red coins, the shine appears at the top of one of the buildings.
- From where you are, jump onto the other tower. There is a tight rope there that leads directly to the shine.
- Walk across the tight rope while avoiding the electric currents. At the end of the rope, grab the shine.
- NOTE:Now that you have 5 total shines, the pathway to Gelato Beach is open. If you want, you can skip ahead to it. Remember that you have to finish up through episode 7 of each world eventually. So if you leave now you'll need to come back to Bianco Hills later.
- TIP: If at any point a shine is too hard, maybe try coming back to it later. You don't have to complete each world all at once.
-
Episode 5: Petey Piranha Strikes Back
- Go back to the building where red coin #8 was in chapter 4. At the top of the spirals where that coin was, there is now a new tight rope.
- You can reach the top of that building the same way as before, but there is another way that's quicker.
- Find the second mini-windmill. Go in between it and the building with the two spirals. Hug the wall of the building. Spin jump and then hover to easily reach the area where you needed to wall jump in the previous chapter.
- Use your wall jumps to reach where red coin #8 was. Then jump to the other spiral.
- The tight rope here is new. Follow it to reach the nearby cliff side.
- Climb the small hills. Make sure you spray the paint first. At the top is a large area of grass covered in paint.
- Do yourself a favor and clear out all of the paint. The little paint monsters are extremely annoying and you won't be able to complete this part if they keep spawning.
- Look out across the cliff and you'll see Petey sleeping.
- As you approach the fence little creatures get stuck in Fludd's nozzle. When you press R it will send them flying. You have to hit Petey to wake him up.
- Hitting Petey can be frustrating and hard. There is no cross hair to indicate where you're aiming.
- TIP: Press Y to help Mario aim. Just do your best to hit Petey, adjusting your aim in between shots.
- Once you've hit Petey, he wakes up and throws a tantrum and the boss fight starts.
- Boss Fight: Petey Piranha Rematch
- This boss fight is much more difficult than the last.
- Jump down to the village.
- Petey flies around shooting paint balls.
- There are of the little pig creatures in the village. There the same as the one you used to wake Petey up. Walk up to one and it will automatically stick to your nozzle.
- To kill Petey you must first knock him down.
- He flies around the village randomly. Locate him and then shoot one of the little pig creatures into him to knock him down. This is easiest if your aiming with Y.
- Once he's on the ground, he immediately summons a tornado. Avoid it, it's not very hard to dodge.
- NOTE: Sometimes Petey will throw multiple tornadoes or simply throw none. It's random.
- Wait for Petey to open his mouth and then spray water in it. This is the same as the previous fight.
- Once his stomach is filled, he will fall over. Butt stomp his stomach to damage him.
- After you've hurt Petey, he flies back into the air. You have to butt stomp him three times to kill him.
- He doesn't have any new tactics as the fight progresses, so repeat the strategy until you've killed him.
- When he dies, the shine sprite drops wherever his body was.
-
Episode 6: The Secret of Dirty Lake
- Be forewarned that this episode is pretty hard.
- Go to the windmill.
- As you approach the bridge you'll notice that the water is polluted. Don't jump in, it drains your life.
- Climb mountain spiral leading to the windmill.
- Behind the mountain is a cave. Before there was a gate that was blocking it, but now it's gone.
- Position yourself on the spiraling path so that you're facing the cave. You're going to jump over the polluted water to reach it.
- Press X to switch to the hover nozzle.
- There are 4 logs in front of the cave, you're going to try and land on one of them.
- Jump over the water towards the cave. At the height of your jump start hovering.
- You should just be able to make it onto the logs. If you miss, quickly jump out of the water and onto the logs before your life drains.
- Spin jump off of the logs and then hover to reach the mouth of the cave. Don't worry about the polluted water spilling out, it won't hurt you. Only falling into the lake does damage.
- There is a turbo nozzle here. It's an upgrade to Fludd. You don't need it now, so go into the cave to reach another obstacle course.
- This area is hard. It might take several tries to complete.
- The first challenge are red and blue platforms. They alternate flipping between the two colors, so you'll constantly need to jump between platforms.
- TIP: Patience is key here. Don't try and get across so quickly that you make mistakes.
- Wait for the blue platforms to flip and then jump onto the first one.
- Jump onto the first red platform, then onto the blue platform to your left. Then jump onto the second red platform. Finally jump to safety on the other side.
- Grab the 1-up on the spinning star.
- TIP: This 1-up is really easy to get. If you can get passed the first obstacle and grab the 1-up, you'll always have enough lives to keep trying if you die.
- Now you need to jump onto the huge block. It's too far for a regular jump. Back up and run towards it. Jump twice in succession, your second jump will go higher than the first. It should be just enough to reach the huge block.
- TIP: You can also get on this huge block by wall jumping between the block's side and the opposite wall.
- Once on top of the huge block, it starts moving automatically. As it takes you to the next area, it flips around. Run along the side of it so that you are always on top. It's easier to run instead of jump because you don't risk accidentally jumping off.
- When the huge block reaches the other side, jump to the platform.
- On this platform some large arrows appear and try to knock you off. They come in a distinct pattern, so they aren't too tough.
- Wait for them to fly across and immediately start running to the other side of the platform. You can make it in a single run if you time it right. If you started late, simply jump over the arrows as they sweep across the platform.
- Another huge block. Jump on it and it will take you to another section of the level.
- This huge block flips just like the last one. As it turns, run so that you're always on the top of it. This section is longer than before, so it's a little harder.
- A 1-up will land on the huge block during this sequence. Grab it. If you're nervous, don't risk dying to get it.
- At the top, jump to the new platform.
- Another section of red and blue platforms. They flip just like before.
- Wait for the red platform to get close enough so that you can jump on it. Also, make sure to jump on it just after it finishes flipping.
- Make your way across this section diagonally, heading forwards and to your right. The platform colors will alternate naturally. This section isn't that hard, but it can be nerve racking since dying will take you back to the beginning.
- At the end of the flipping platforms is a block with the shine. Grab it to complete the level.
-
Episode 7: Shadow Mario on the Loose
- This is it, the final showdown in Bianco Hills. Actually, this level is really easy. It'll be a piece of cake compared to how hard the previous episode was.
- Immediately you'll see Shadow Mario on the path. Chase him.
- As you chase after him, spray Shadow Mario with water. This does damage to him just like before.
- Shadow Mario jumps across the river and into the village part of the level. From here he will randomly run around the village.
- If you lose track of him, just run around the village. Shadow Mario can't go to other parts of the level, so it won't take long to find him.
- Just keep spraying him with water. He really doesn't run very fast and he hardly fights back.
- After spraying him enough he'll give up the final shine and run away. The battle is refreshingly easy. Grab the shine.
- NOTE This is all of the episodes of Bianco Hills you need to play in order to beat the game. There is an Episode 8, but it's not required. There are also 2 secret shines in every world. These secret shines are optional as well.
-
Episode 8: The Red Coins of the Lake (optional)
- Follow the path and enter the village. Go to the two tight ropes in-between the buildings. Use them to jump up onto the building's roofs. There is a rocket nozzle here, grab it.
- With the rocket nozzle, head out towards the entrance to the windmill spiral.
- To the right of the bridge are two platforms with a tight rope between them. Rocket nozzle up to the platforms and jump on the rope to get red coin #1.
- Follow the route of tight ropes that goes underneath the wooden bridge. These are the ones you used in Chapter 3 to reach the cave. Red coin #2 is on one of the tight ropes.
- From here you'll see another red coin out in the water. Jump out and swim to it. To get it, rocket nozzle yourself out of the water when your directly underneath it. If you're having trouble, watch your shadow and the shadow of the red coin. Rocket yourself up when the shadows overlap. This is red coin #3.
- When you reach the hill where the cave is, jump up onto the tight rope. Instead of heading into the cave, follow the tight rope the opposite way to find a platform. Go across another tight rope to find red coin #4. It's in the middle of the rope.
- After getting the coin, keep following that tight rope across the lake to reach a new platform. You'll get pretty high up, but the rest of the red coins are up here.
- From this new platform, travel along a tight rope that leads towards the windmill. There are electric currents on this rope, so jump over them.
- Red coin #5 is in the middle of the rope, but you'll need to jump to get it. Once you have it, keep traveling across the rope and onto the platform on the other side.
- There are wind enemies up here that try and knock you down. Make sure to jump over them when they charge you.
- The tight ropes here go in a triangle formation.
- Go across the only new tight rope to reach another platform. From there take the tight rope leading away from the windmill. Red coin # 6 is on that rope. Once you've gotten it, get to the next platform.
- This is the last tight rope in the triangle formation. Red coin #7 is on it, although you may not see it. It's very high in the air. Jump in the middle of the tight rope to get it.
- TIP: If you fall there is an easy way back up. Go along the path leading to the windmill. Just passed the wooden bridge are 3 yellow coins going up into the air. Rocket yourself up directly underneath the coins to reach a series of tight ropes that will bring you back to the top quickly.
- The last coin is in between two platform near the windmill. Unfortunately, there is no rope that leads to it. You'll have to rocket nozzle there and that is extremely tough.
- Go back to the platform just the rope that lead to red coin #6. You'll see a nearby platform that has a blue coin on it. Rocket nozzle to it. If you miss, just try again. It's a hard jump.
- TIP: You can also get to this platform by getting a hover nozzle (at the base of the windmill) and climbing the windmill. You can jump from the windmill blades and hover to the platform. Just remember that if you mess up with this way, you won't have the rocket nozzle to get you quickly back up in the air.
- From this platform, travel across the tight rope. Jump in the center to grab red coin #8.
- The shine appears in an indent on the windmill, right by where the blades come down so that you can jump on them. Ride on of the windmill blades and then jump into the indent to reach it.
-
Secret Shine #1 (optional)
- To get this shine enter episode 3 after you've completed the 7 main episodes.
- Enter the hill cave to find the obstacle course.
- Unlike before, you have Fludd. But because of this, the challenge is harder. Now you need to collect 8 red coins in the obstacle course. Keep in mind that this is timed.
- When you're ready, stomp the red switch. You have 1 minute to collect all 8 red coins.
- Run forward along the moving platforms. Red coin #1 is on the second one. Grab it as you traverse them.
- Now there are a bunch of moving blocks. There is a red coin on each corner block of this section. Hover to the left-most block to get red coin #2.
- Jump and hover back to the right side of the blocks to grab red coin #3.
- Look forward. You'll see red coin #4 a few blocks in front of you. Jump and hover to reach it.
- You're halfway there. This next jump is tough. Look to your right and you'll see two star platforms. The blocking your moving on is moving up and down. When it reaches it's maximum height, jump and hover to the first star platform. Here you'll get red coin #5.
- Jump to the next star platform and get red coin #6.
- Time to backtrack a little. Jump back to the first star platform. Then jump and hover back to the moving block where red coin #4 was.
- Look to your left. Red coin #7 is on the corner last corner block. Jump and hover over to it.
- Another tough jump. There is a star platform to your left with the last coin.
- Spin jump and hover over to it to get red coin #8.
- Once you have all 8 coins, a new star appears at the end of the obstacle course.
- Carefully jump to the green pathway and be careful not to get knocked off by the giant blocks.
- Traverse across a few more star platforms and you'll find the shine. The obstacle course is really easy with Fludd.
-
Secret Shine #2 (optional)
- This is very similar to the previous shine. Enter episode 6 after finishing the 7 mandatory episodes.
- Go to the back of the spiral windmill and then enter the lake cave. This is exactly the same as when you entered it in episode 6.
- You're back in the obstacle course, except now you have Fludd.
- Butt stomp the red switch you're ready. You'll have one and a half minutes to get all 8 red coins.
- Jump across the blue and red platforms. Hover over the center to grab red coin #1.
- Next jump on the star platform. Grab red coin #2 and a 1-up.
- Run forward and jump on the huge block. It spins while moving forward. Just stay on the top of it at all times while it's spinning.
- When the huge block reaches the other side, jump onto the static platform.
- Run forward a grab red coin #3. Be careful of the red arrows that try and knock you off.
- Get on the next huge block. It will rise into the air as it spins. While riding it, grab red coin #4 as it passes by.
- You'll ride the rotating block for a while. Grab the 1-up as it passes by. Eventually red coin #5 will pass by as well. Make sure to grab it.
- When you reach the top of the course, jump off of the rotating block and onto the yellow platform.
- Run forward a little and you'll see another set of red and blue platforms.
- Go directly forward while traversing the red and blue platforms. You'll run into red coin #6.
- Turn to the right. Red coin #7 is in the middle of the red and blue platforms. Jump and hover over to it. But be careful not to get flipped off of the platforms.
- Finally, turn left and you'll see red coin #8 on the far corner of the platforms. Jump over and grab it.
- The timer stops once you get the last red coin and the shine appears on the nearby platform.
- Jump and hover over to the static platform to claim the shine.
-
Scoring 100 Coins in Bianco Hills
- Episode 8 is the easiest one to do this challenge in. This is because you get access to a Yoshi
- NOTE: If you haven't completed episode 4 of Pinna Park, the Yoshi egg will not show up. Complete that episode before attempting to get 100 coins in Bianco Hills.
- The circles of flowers are your biggest source of coins. Spray the two fake flower enemies into a wall to get 3 coins each (you only get 1 if you jump on them). Then spin spray the rest of the flowers so that they all open at once. This causes 5 coins to appear in the center of the flower circle.
- All enemies drop coins. Jump on their heads or eat them while riding Yoshi
- You get a ton of coins from the bee hives. Use Yoshi's tongue to eat all of the bees near a hive. Each drops a coin. Then spray the hive down to cause a whole swarm of bees to chase you. These bees can also be eaten for coins. Between both bee hives, you'll get nearly half of the coins you need.
- Spray the windows in the village. A few of them drop coins.
- Yoshi can eat the yellow butterflies in the village. Eating a whole group causes a coin to drop.
- Look for little circles of coins on the surface of the water. Just swim up and grab them.
- Finally, there are coins on the tight ropes over the water.
- You only need 100 coins, but there are many more than that in this episode. Get the coins from the flowers and bee hives first.
- Once you have 100 coins, the shine appears a wooden platform near the big wall. Rocket nozzle to it.
