Story and Gameplay
Unlike other entires in the Super Mario Bros. series, in Super Mario RPG Mario and Bowser fight as allies. The game begins with Mario attempting to rescue Princess Toadstool in Bowser's castle, but is interrupted when a large sword crashes into the castle. The sword splits up the three characters, and when Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, he sets out to find the Princess. Mario is joined by the characters Bowser, Mallow, Geno and the Princess herself, who help him get to the bottom of the evil taking over the land. The battles in the game play out similarly to other Square games of the era, such as Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy II: battles take place on a battle screen, and are turn-based. You select moves and attacks for each of your characters individually, and there is a "perfect timing" aspect to the battles that awards extra damage. -
