Basic Moves Guide
- Use the analog on the nunchuk to move Mario.
- Press A on the Wiimote to Jump.
- Hold the Z button on the nunchuk to crouch. Mario can scuttle about while crouching.
- Guide the Wiimote cursor on the screen by moving the Wiimote. The cursor can collect Star Bits as well as manipulate some items such as grass and snow.
- You can aim the Wiimote cursor on a target on-screen and fire Star Bits at it. To fire Star Bits, press the B button on the Wiimote.
- Shake the Wiimote to spin attack. Mario gains this move after completing the intro level. The spin attack is Mario's general purpose attack move and method of interacting with objects.
- Tap A in water to swim. To dive underwater, press Z. Hold up on the analog to swim further down, and down to swim to the surface.
- The d-pad on the Wiimote controls the camera. Press up on the d-pad to zoom the camera in, down to zoom out, left or right to change the angle.
- Press C on the nunchuk to reset the camera behind Mario.
-
Advanced Moves Guide
- Mario's stomp is his standard attack. Unlike spin attacks, enemies defeated by a stomp often drop coins, increasing Mario's health. Note that some enemies are immune to stomps or cannot even be touched. To stomp, jump into the air and land on the enemy.
- Mario can add height and control to any jump he performs by using the spin attack in mid-air. This technique, called "spin buffering" or simply "buffering", is an extremely important move. To buffer any jump, shake the Wiimote while airborne.
- Mario can perform a "long jump" while running, leaping very far. This is one of the most important moves in the game, and mastering it will make many levels greatly easier. To long jump, while running, press Z, then A before Mario stops.
- Mario can perform a "ground pound" attack, which sends Mario sends his full weight straight to the ground. This can destroy some blocks and activate some switches. To ground pound, press Z while in mid-air.
- Mario can perform a useful high backflip from a stopped position. Hold Z in a stopped position and press A to backflip.
- Mario can perform a "cartwheel jump" while in the middle of turning away from a full run. Difficult to perform, but it is Mario's fastest high jump in the hands of a master. To cartwheel jump, run forward, turn in the opposite direction and jump while Mario skids.
- Mario can chain multiple standard jumps together to perform a series of very high leaps. Press A just after landing from a regular jump to chain into a higher jump. The maximum amount of jumps that can be chained together are three (also known as a "triple jump").
- Mario can "wall jump" off of a flat, non-slick wall surface. To wall jump, jump into a wall, and if Mario slides down it, jump again to wall jump. Mario can chain wall jumps together to "chimney jump" up two opposing surfaces.
- Mario can "air brake" his jumps in mid-air, to keep him from overshooting a target. This is especially useful for long jumping. To air brake, hold the analog in the opposite direction of his jump before he lands.
- Mario can "fast swim" by shaking the Wiimote repeatedly underwater.
- Mario can climb up vines and similar objects by touching them, then shaking the Wiimote.
- Mario can use "Pull Stars" to traverse voids if he is in range of one. Aim the cursor on a Pull Star, and hold the A button to tow Mario towards it. Release A to let Mario fall away from it.
- Mario can cling to Sling Pods to fling himself in a direction. To use a Sling Pod, touch one, then grab the Sling Pod by aiming the cursor on it and holding A. Pull the Sling Pod in a direction, then release A to send Mario flying.

Power-Up Guide
- Life Mushroom: These will extend Mario's health meter to 6 points. Life Mushrooms will also completely restore Mario's health in the process. If you lose more than 3 points, the Life Mushroom's effect will disappear.
- Fire Flower: Transform into Fire Mario. As Fire Mario, the Spin Attack is replaced with the ability to hurl fireballs. The fireballs can defeat certain enemies, melt ice, and affect objects such as switches and crates. Fire Mario expires after a limited time.
- Ice Flower: Transform into Ice Mario. Ice Mario can transform solid bodies of liquid such as lakes, waterfalls, even lava into traversable ice. Ice Mario can also skate across slick surfaces (including newly-frozen liquid); shake the Wiimote to enter "ice-skating mode". Ice Mario expires after a limited time.
- Bee Mushroom: Transform into Bee Mario. As Bee Mario, the jump is replaced with the ability to fly. Flight time is represented by a "fly meter"; when exhausted, Bee Mario will fall to earth. Landing on solid ground replenishes the fly meter. Bee Mario can also "wall-crawl" on certain surfaces, but cannot normally grip objects and ledges. Taking damage or entering water will revert Mario to normal.
- Boo Mushroom: Transform into Boo Mario. As a Boo, Mario can float in the air by pressing A. He can also phase through some walls and objects by shaking the Wiimote. Taking damage or entering light will revert Mario to normal.
- Spring Mushroom: Transform into Spring Mario. As Spring Mario, the jump button causes Mario to spring extremely high into the air; on the flip side, Mario's maneuverability is severely impacted, as he is in a constant state of bounding. Taking damage reverts Mario to normal.
- Starman: With this Mario is invulnerable to damage and can destroy almost any enemy by touch. Mario also moves extremely quickly and jumps far. Invincible Mario expires after a limited time.
- Red Star: Transform into Flying Mario. To fly, spin attack in the air, and guide Mario's trajectory by tilting the analog on the nunchuk in the direction you wish to go (left/right to bank in either direction, up to fly down, down to fly up). Flying Mario expires after a limited time.
- Koopa Shells: These can be collected manually or pulled into your grip by spin attacking. Throw a Koopa Shell by shaking the Wiimote; the shell will fly forward in a straight line. Green shells are normal, red shells can home in on enemies, gold shells can open gold treasure chests. Bringing a Koopa Shell underwater will cause it to function as a fast submersible vehicle (complete with a searchlight).

Luigi Guide
- Luigi is unlockable if the player completes the level "The Fate Of The Universe" with 120 stars in possession. Note that it is not possible to acquire 120 stars until after beating the game at least once (as this unlocks more levels for Mario to complete). Luigi's game plays almost identical to Mario save for a few minor differences listed here.
- All of Luigi's jumps have much higher range, height, and air time than Mario.
- Luigi's traction is terrible; he will slide and skid about on any surface.
- Luigi has considerable lag from a standing position to a full run.
- Luigi loses a chunk of "air" from his air meter every time you use the spin attack underwater (this makes the "fast swimming" techinque more dangerous for Luigi to use).
- Luigi's opponent in the Cosmic Bro. races is Cosmic Luigi, who is a much harder opponent than Mario.
-
The Star Festival
- This introduction level introduces the player to the basic controls. Use the analog on the nunchuk to guide Mario, and collect Star Bits with the Wiimote cursor. Walk down the hill to the cutscene, then walk forward to the castle. After the lengthy cutscene, you will begin the first true level of the game, "Grand Star Rescue".
-
Grand Star Rescue
- Follow the star bunny around the planet until the bunny proposes a hide-and-seek game.
- You must find and catch the three bunnies to continue. One is inside a crater with a coin floating above it. One is inside the green warp pipe. One is inside a patch of grass surrounded by big green bulbs. After finding a bunny, chase after it and catch it.
- After catching them all, climb up the new stone dais that appears. Talk to Rosalina (the woman in the regal blue dress).
- Rosalina will grant Mario the extremely important Star Spin (a.k.a. "spin attack"). Shake the Wiimote to spin about. Note that the spin must be recharged briefy after each use.
- With the spin attack, destroy the crystals to reveal a Launch Star. Jump into the Launch Star and shake the Wiimote to launch to a new area.
- Next area: Mario lands on a planet bombarded by meteors. Note the black hole below; black holes are present in areas throughout the game, and falling off a surface with a black hole below will result in Mario's doom.
- Watch out for meteors and search the planet for 5 "star chips". Collecting all 5 will create a new Launch Star to escape this planet. One is in a crystal next to a Luma (the talking small stars). The rest are on or near pedestals on the planet.
- Once the new Launch Star is made, use it. The next planet will have a Luma trapped in a cage, who claims one of the Goombas (the mushroom men). Defeat all the Goombas with stomps and spin attacks until you find the one with the key (the one with the key will need an additional kick while he's stunned if you use the spin attack. Touch him while he's stunned to kick him.)
- The Luma will turn into a Sling Star, which allows you to travel within the area rather than a new one. Use it to be slung to a new planet with another captive Luma.
- The Goomba with the key this time is the giant one. Despite his size, you can defeat him with spin attacks just like any other Goomba, or you can lure him to one of the tall pylons and spin attack the pylon; the sound wave will stun the Goomba. Get his key and enter the unlocked warp pipe next to the now-free Luma.
- In the new room, you must step on every yellow floor plate to turn it blue. Stepping on a blue switch will turn it back to yellow. Watch out for Goombas and energy pylons. Turning all the plates blue will free the Grand Star; grab it.

The Observatory
- After getting your first Grand Star, you will be introduced to the Comet Observatory for the first time. The Observatory acts as a massive hub to even smaller hubs; these smaller hubs lead to galaxies in where more stars can be collected.
- The general goal is to search the smaller hubs for another Grand Star. Grand Stars unlock more areas of the Observatory, allowing access to new smaller hubs, which in turn allows access to more levels with stars and Grand Stars. Talk to the black Luma near Rosalina at anytime to check your progress on stars and Grand Stars.
- After completing the level "Bee Mario/Luigi Takes Flight", in the Honeyhive Galaxy, a group of Toads will move into the Observatory. One of them, named "Mailtoad", located in front of Rosalina, will provide Mario with letters that give him 1-ups to unlocking new levels. Be sure to check with Mailtoad whenever an "envelope" symbol appears above his head.
-
The Terrace
- The Terrace will be the only small hub available when you first arrive. It is the hut on the grassy knoll near Rosalina's position. Inside is a Pull Star; press A to latch onto it and reach a galaxy map to select a galaxy to travel to.
- Each galaxy has several levels available for it, however, you must have the requisite number of stars to access it. Your ultimate goal is to gain enough stars to access "Bowser Jr's Robot Reactor", which grants you a Grand Star that will unlock more hubs in the observatory.
- Sometimes a comet will appear on a galaxy. Going to the galaxy while a comet is there will result in a special mission available for one star. Each galaxy only has two comets: one will be of four types, always the same for each galaxy: Speedy (a timed level), Daredevil (survive a level without taking any damage), Cosmic (a race against your clone, named Cosmic Bro), and Fast Foe (the enemies move at fast speeds). The other is a special purple comet that appears for each galaxy only after completing the game. If you wish to force a comet to appear, talk to the purple Luma with the wands near the Terrace.
-
Dino Piranha
- Use the nearby bridge to go underneath the planet.
- Follow up the path with a Goomba wandering it. Talk to the Luma and he will turn into a sling star, which lets you reach a Launch Star.
- On the next planet, explore it and find 5 Star Chips to create the next Launch Star. Watch out for the rolling boulders; you can destroy one for a lot of Star Chips by spinning /ground pounding into its red "eye".
- Next planet: kill the Piranha Plant and climb the vine it creates to the next one (to climb a vine, shake the Wiimote).
- Next planet: make your way forward against the path of rolling Chomps. Unlike the boulders, the Chomps can not be destroyed save by Invincible Mario, so use the safety zones to avoid them.
- Past the spawning point of the Chomps is a purple Piranha Plant. To kill it, spin attack a green bulb into its face, then stomp its head while it is stunned. You can also trick it into attacking and stomp its head after it misses. Climb the vine to the next planet.
- Next planet: climb the top of the stone structure to the Launch Star. Look out for Goombas and spike plants. The next planet has a boss.
- BOSS: Dino Piranha
- You must spin attack the nut at the end of the boss' tail to cause it damage. Four times will kill the boss. Each hit will cause it to run faster; it's best to wait for the boss to slow down a bit after each hit before attempting another attack.

A Snack Of Cosmic Proportions
- Your main goal is to collect 100 Star Bits. Collect as many as possible here, then head up the stone staircase with a blue Luma at the end.
- Talk to the blue Luma and he will transform into a series of Pull Stars. Use them to reach the Launch Star (to use a Pull Star, aim the Wiimote at one and press A).
- If you need more Star Bits to reach 100, collect some on the new planet with Goombas and spike plants before continuing with the Launch Star to the next area. If you have 100 Star Bits, then break the crystal with the Launch Star and ride it into space. You will pass through another Launch Star in space; use it to fly to the egg-shaped planet. If you do not have 100 Star Bits, then skip this second Launch Star.
- Next area: if you are skilled enough, you can break the boulders here for a lot of Star Bits (spin attack into their red "eyes"). You should have 100 by now; use the Launch Star here to fly to the egg-shaped planet, avoiding the second Launch Star you see in space. If you still do not have 100 star bits by this point, use the second Launch Star to return to the planet with spike plants and search for more Star Bits.
- Your ultimate destination is the egg-shaped planet. The Hungry Luma is here; feed it 100 Star Bits to transform it to a new planet. Use the now-available Launch Star to reach it.
- Search for a ledge that Mario can reach and use it to climb up the mountain here. Near the 1-UP is a spike plant guarding a wall you can chimney jump upwards to the peak. Destroy the plant using a green bulb and wall jump up the chimney (To wall jump, jump against a wall, then jump towards the opposite wall as Mario slides down).
- At the peak is a stone stair case that leads to the Launch Star. Use it to reach a planet that resembles a Dr. Mario pill.
- On the surface of the "pill planet", Search for a crystal with no Coins or Star Bits and destroy it; it will reveal a hole to drop into.
- Inside the "pill planet", follow the path right. Note that gravity changes depending on which colored wall Mario is in front of.
- Stay near the ceiling as much as possible as you travel right to eventually fall upwards to the next level (watch out for platforms pushing you into gravity fields you do not want). On the next level, follow the path left and fall upwards to a dome with the Launch Star. Launch away.
- Next area: search for five blue Star Chips floating above and below the structure.
- When collected, they make a ring of pull stars around a Star. Latch onto one pull star, then latch Mario onto one on the opposite end. Mario will be pulled along the void; as he gets near the star, latch onto a pull star behind it so that Mario is pulled into the star.

King Kaliente's Battle Fleet
- At the start, again, go underneath the planet using the bridge. This time take the warp pipe by the cobblestone structure.
- Explore the room inside if you like. When done, take the warp pipe inside to appear on the roof of the house near the start. Use the Launch Star nearby.
- Next area: run to the right and spin a coconut into the big spike plant. It will leave behind a Sling Star; use it.
- Next area: explore the planet and look for a tall, grinning yellow cactus (named Pokey) to pop out of the ground. The goal is to launch a coconut into it; it will fall apart. While it is down, squish Pokey's head with a stomp (jump on top of its head). It will turn into a Launch Star. If you are injured, stomp a Goomba to get a coin.
- Next area: just use the sling star to move on.
- Next area: run towards the sides of the planet and look for gaps in the electric fencing. Use them to reach the other side of the planet. Watch out for Chomps and Bullet Bills. Bullet Bills detonate when touched, so hide from them behind cover if need be.
- Follow up the stone steps the octopi are guarding, then break the crystal at the top for the Launch Star.
- Mario will land on an airship. Two octopi on the ship across will fire coconuts. Hit the coconuts with spin attacks to reflect them back to defeat them. Do NOT try reflecting any fireballs they shoot.
- When both octopi are defeated, use the new gangplank to cross to the next ship. Search for a Launch Star and use it.
- Next area: run to the other side of the planet for a boss battle.
- BOSS: King Kaliente
- The King will shoot coconuts, similar to the Octopi you battled previously. Reflect the coconut back to damage the King.
- After taking damage, he will next shoot fireballs and coconuts. Avoid the fireballs and reflect the coconuts. After knocking a coconut at him, he will knock it back; reflect the same coconut again right back at him to damage him.
- For the final attack, he will flood the area with blue creatures that will tail Mario. Avoid them and again reflect his coconuts. This time, you will need to reflect the same coconut three times in a row to finally defeat him. Take the star he drops.

-
Dino Piranha Speed Run (COMET)
- You have 4 minutes to reach and defeat Dino Piranha. Run underneath the planet and up the cobblestone tower. Talk to the Luma and use the Launch Star he creates.
- Quickly find the five star chips in the next area. Stay out of the grey muck if possible while doing so, and look out for Chomps.
- Next area: kill the Piranha Plant and use the vine.
- Run against the path of rolling Chomps to the end. Take down the purple Piranha Plant by spinning a green bud into its face, then stomping its head. Use the vine it leaves behind.
- Climb up the stone steps the octopi are guarding and use the Launch Star.
- You are now at Dino Piranha. Defeat him as before; to defeat him more quickly, dodge his charges and make a beeline for the nut on his tail after he passes.
-
Luigi On The Roof
- This star is only available after 1) Completing "Luigi And The Haunted Mansion" in Ghostly Galaxy and 2) Receiving the appropriate letter from Luigi from Mailtoad. When you receive the letter from Mailtoad, this level will be selectable from the Good Egg Galaxy set.
- To complete it, simply go under the planet at the start and use the warp pipe. Then simply use the warp pipe inside to warp to the top of the house at the start, where Luigi is located. Talk to Luigi.
