  • The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills 30-13 in Super Bowl XXVIII. In a game which marked the first time that two teams played each other in consecutive Super Bowls, the Cowboys became the fifth team in league history to win back-to-back Super Bowl titles, joining: the Green Bay Packers in 1966 and 1967; the Miami Dolphins in 1972 and 1973; the Pittsburgh Steelers, who accomplished the feat twice (1974-1975 and 1978-1979); and the San Francisco 49ers in 1988 and 1989. The loss by Buffalo was their fourth consecutive. Cowboys running back Emmitt Smith rushed for 132 yards and scored 2 touchdowns to be named the Most Valuable Player of the game.
  • 0-2 Start? No Problem for Dallas

The Cowboys started the season at 0-2, with losses to archrival Washington and the Bills. Never before had a team started a season 0-2 and reached the Super Bowl, much less won it. But the Cowboys went on to win 12 of their last 14 games in the regular season. Then in the playoffs, they knocked off both the Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers to reach the Super Bowl.

One major reason the Cowboys started 0-2 was because Emmitt Smith was holding out due to a contract dispute. After losing the first two games, the Cowboys reached an accord with Smith, and he wound up winning the league MVP award that season. In the regular season finale against the New York Giants, with the NFC East and home-field advantage on the line, Smith rushed for 168 yards despite playing with a separated shoulder he suffered during the game.
