Super Bowl XXVII

  • The Dallas Cowboys defeated the Buffalo Bills 52-17 in Super Bowl XXVII. This game would be the 7th played in the greater Los Angeles area. The game was originally slated to be hosted in Arizona, but the NFL pulled the game. This was because of Arizona's then refusal to recognize Martin Luther King Day as a holiday. Despite the fact that this was another Los Angeles hosted game, it would turn out to be their last to date. By 1995, both area Los Angeles teams, the Rams and Raiders would move away. As for the game, Dallas head coach Jimmy Johnson became the first coach in American football history to win a college football national championship and a Super Bowl championship. Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman, who played his college home game for UCLA on the same field, threw for 273 yards and 4 touchdowns, and won game MVP honors.
  • Inside the Third Reich

For the third straight season, Buffalo reached the Super Bowl, and unfortunately for them, they became the first team in history to lose three straight times. Yet, the opportunity would have never come about were it not for backup quarterback Frank Reich. The Bills finished 11-5 and had to play on NFL Wild Card Weekend against the Houston Oilers. The Bills trailed early in the third quarter 35-3, but Reich, playing for injured Jim Kelly, led the greatest come-from-behind win in league history, referred to forever as simply "The Comeback".
  • "How 'bout dem Cowboys?"

In 1988, Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys and unceremoniously fired Tom Landry, the only coach the team had ever had. Jimmy Johnson has just won the national title with the University of Miami, and was brought in to coach the Cowboys. Their first season together, they went 1-15. But Jones and Johnson showed great patience in rebuilding the team through the draft, aiding by a bevy of picks acquired in the famous Herschel Walker Trade. With future hall of famers Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin, and a slew of all-pro talent, the Cowboys quickly ascended back to the top of the league.
