The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals 20-16 in Super Bowl XXIII. This was the second of Cincinnati's two Super Bowl appearances, and the lost both of them to the 49ers. The game marked a return to Miami following a 10-year absence. The game is most remembered for four things: the final Super Bowl for league commissioner Pete Rozelle; the final game coached by Bill Walsh; the gruesome first quarter injury suffered by Bengals defensive tackle Tim Krumrie in which both leg bones were shattered; and the winning touchdown drive scored by the 49ers. They marched 92 yards in just over 3 minutes, scoring a Joe Montana to John Taylor 10-yard pass with 34 seconds remaining in the game. San Francisco wide receiver Jerry Rice caught 11 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown, and was named the game's MVP.

How they got there:
The Bengals won the AFC Central with a 12-4 record, led by the coaching of Sam Wyche, the quarterbacking of Boomer Esiason, and the running/end zone dancing of Ickey Woods and his Ickey Shuffle. They then defeated Seattle and then Buffalo to win their second AFC Championship. The 49ers won the NFC West with a 10-6 record, then defeated the Minnesota Vikings and Chicago Bears en route to their third Super Bowl appearance in eight years -
Off field distractions
Super Bowl week was marred by two incidents that took place off the field. During the week, a racial shooting incident took place in Miami during which a Hispanic police officer, William Lozano, shot an unarmed African-American suspect. The incident led to rioting in the "Overtown" section of Miami, and many wondered aloud if the game should be relocated. Then the night before the game, Bengals running back Stanley Wilson was caught doing drugs in his hotel room the night before the game. He was arrested, and the Bengals deactivated him for the game. -
