The Oakland Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14 in Super Bowl XI. The game was held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on January 9, 1977. Raiders wide receiver Fred Biletnikoff was selected was the Super Bowl MVP.
How They Got There
The Raiders, under Head Coach John Madden, won 13 of 14 regular season games, earning them the #1 seed in the playoffs. They defeated the New England Patriots and Pittsburgh Steelers to clinch the AFC championship and reach the Super Bowl.
The Vikings finished the regular season with a 11-2-1 record also earning a #1 seed in the post season. They went on to defeat the Washington Redskins and Los Angeles Rams to take the NFC title and head to the Super Bowl.
Bicentennial Expansion
The 1976 NFL season saw the league add two expansion teams to the mix. Both the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers joined the league that season. The Seahawks played in the NFC West, while the Bucs played in the AFC West.
The Seahawks went 3-11 that first season, while the Buccaneers lost all 14 contest that they played in. Their winless season was the first in the post-merger era, and has since been matched by the 2008 Detroit Lions.
