Seattle alternative rock band Sunny Day Real Estate formed in 1992, during the explosion of that city's music scene, and helped to introduce the emo genre to a wider audience. The band broke up in 1995, then reformed briefly from 1997 to 2001. The four members all still play together occasionally in their new project, The Fire Theft.

Career Overview
The band originally formed under the name Empty Set, switching to "Sunny Day Real Estate" in 1993.Their debut album, Diary, was released by Sub Pop Records in 1994 and included the single "Seven." While recording the self-titled follow-up, eventually released by Sub Pop as simply "LP2," the band fought continuously (though details are still murky). They broke up in 1995, with both William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel leaving to join the Foo Fighters.
In 1997, members of Sunny Day Real Estate regrouped to record some new songs for a box set collection. They decided, instead, to record a full album (save for Mendel, who remained with the Foo Fighters), which turned into 1998's How It Feels to be Something On.
The Rising Tide followed in 2000, but failed to find an audience, and further suffered commercially after the distributing label - Time Bomb Recordings - went bankrupt. The band split up permanently that same year, but Enigk, Mendel and Goldsmith still play together in The Fire Theft.
