The festival serves as a platform to showcase both American and International independent films. The festival is structured so as to allow competition in the categories of feature-length films, documentaries, short films, as well a American and U.S dramatic films. Sundance Background
The Sundance Film Festival was first held in 1978. It was first known as the Utah/US Film Festival and was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Actor Robert Redford served as the event's inaugural chairman, with the event serving to present a retrospective of films, including Midnight Cowboy, Mean Streets, A Streetcar Named Desire and Deliverance among others.http://www.sundanceguide.net/basics/history/

2011 Meet the Artists: Cindy Meehl
On Meet the Artists, Cindy Meehl talks about her documentary film "Buck" premiering in the U.S. Documentary Competition at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Meehl talks about the early childhood of Buck and how that shaped his relationship with horses and life. She felt that his story was so powerful that it had to be told. Meehl feels that America needs inspiring stories and she felt that this was one of them.
