  • Sundance Background

Originally the "Utah/US Festival" in 1978, the festival was moved from Salt Lake City to Park City in 1981. After experiencing some financial difficulties at first, the festival was renamed "Sundance" upon the inclusion of actor Robert Redford to the board.

Similar to the Toronto International Film Festival, Sundance gradually went from being a small indie film gathering to a high-profile event, presently featuring studio movies and attracting A-list actors. Though some criticize Hollywood's influence on it, the festival's legacy only continues to grow as it gains more and more media coverage and hype each year.
