Sun Kil Moon is an indie rock band based in San Francisco, California, led by singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek, who previously led the 1990's band Red House Painters. Kozelek has also released a number of solo recordings under his own name.
Inspired by folk-rock songwriters like John Denver and Neil Young, Sun Kil Moon's music is not far removed from that of Kozelek's previous band and solo recordings. The band's sound includes quiet acoustic guitar ballads reminiscent of the work of songwriters like Nick Drake, as well as noisier, electric-guitar based songs inspired by Neil Young's 1970's work with Crazy Horse.
The band's songs were featured in the 2005 Steve Martin film Shopgirl, in which Kozelek also had a supporting role as a fictional musician. Their latest album, April, features cameo appearances from Death Cab for Cutie and The Postal Service singer Ben Gibbard and Bonnie "Prince" Billy.
