The 2008 Summer Paralympics will follow the 2008 Summer Olympics and take place from September 6 to September 17, 2008. The events will be held in Beijing, China at the same locations as the Summer Olympics.
The Paralympics consists of nearly 4,000 athletes from 150 nations who compete in 20 events. The difference between the Prarlympics and the Olympics is that all competitors have a mental or physical disability.
History of the Paralympics
The idea for the Paralympics was created in 1948 by Sir Ludwig Guttmann of London, England, specifically for spinal cord injury victims of World War II. The official Paralympic Games were first held in 1960 in Rome, with 400 athletes.
