  The festivities included a handover of the Olympic flag from Beijing to London, the host of the 2012 Olympics. London Mayor Boris Johnson was in attendance at Beijing National Stadium to accept the flag. London also held Olympic festivities on August 24 to kick off the four-year journey to the London games.
