Sugar Cookies

Sugar cookies are popular, simple, sweet cookies typically made with sugar, salt, vanilla, milk, eggs, flour, vinegar and milk. They can be made crispy or soft, may be flavored and decorated with icing and sprinkles. Decorated sugar cookies are popular for the Christmas holidays, but also enjoyed for Halloween, Easter, Valentine's Day, Thanksgiving and other holiday celebrations.

A few names given to the sugar cookies were jumbles, jumbals, crybabies, plunkets and gemmels. Early sugar cookie recipes were called gimblettes in France and cimbellines in Italy.

The sugar cookie came about during the 17th century in the Nazareth area of the state of Pennsylvania. They called the cookie, the Nazareth Sugar Cookie which they baked the cookies in the shape of a keystone, the state's symbol. Sugar cookies are believed to be derived from an unleavened cookie called a jumble. While other cookies are baked in a circle, sugar cookies can be rolled out and cut into shapes using cookie cutters. They can also be decorated with various icing and sprinkle combinations. Sugar cookies are baked until they form crisp edges, but some people prefer a soft and chewy texture. This is achieved by baking the cookies for less time.
