• Background

  Born in Detroit, Michigan, Stevens began experimenting with music at an early age and taught himself to play many different instruments, including the guitar, piano, drums, banjo and oboe. After recording his debut album (A Sun Came) while still in college, he moved to New York City and founded the label Asthmatic Kitty Records.

• Fifty States Project

  Stevens has said that he intends to release a separate album for each of the 50 U.S. states. Starting with 2003's Michigan and followed up with the critically acclaimed Illinois, each album delves into the characters, stories, legends and myths surrounding each state.
