History
After borrowing money from his friend Peter Buck, Fred De Luca started his own sandwich shop in 1965 at the age of 17 in order to pay college tuition. Although the store was not located in a good location, customers lined up on the store's first day. Advertisements referred to the restaurant as "Pete's Submarines", but instead sounded like Pizza Marines. The name was changed to "Pete's Subway" and was eventually shortened to just "Subway." Today, the franchise has over 28,700 locations in 86 countries, bringing in over $9 billion of business each year.Meet Jared
Jared Fogle became Subway's spokesperson in 1999 after losing over 240 pounds on his own "Subway diet." Better known simply as Jared, he would eat a six-inch turkey sub everyday for lunch, and a foot-long veggie sub for dinner. After losing the weight, word spread about his incredible feat, and Jared's first Subway commercial aired on January 1, 2000.
