  • The Subaru Forester is an all-wheel-drive crossover SUV, first introduced in 1997.

While the original model was a version of the Subaru Legacy wagon with increased ground clearance, the Subaru Forester developed into a genuine mid-size SUV with its 2009 redesign.

    • "This time around, the Forester's refinement has turned into a relative asset. The cabin isn't as classy as those of some of the overachievers in this segment, but overall quality has improved to a point where excuses no longer need to be made. Its cargo-area execution and driving dynamics remain as good as ever, as do the Forester's go-anywhere capabilities."

    • "Redesigned, the 2009 Subaru Forester offers more than ever before, for less money. It's slightly longer and wider, and has a good bit more rear seat legroom and cargo space. Its 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine is handicapped by a four-speed automatic transmission, more so in the base engine than the turbocharged version. It's stable and rugged off road, using its proven all-wheel drive and a new rear suspension to good advantage, while there are no harsh spots to the highway ride."

    • "The greater length, stretched wheelbase, and new double A-arm rear suspension (rubber isolated) give the Forester an absolutely splendid (as well as quieter) ride. Even off road, the darn thing wafts you along like a glass of expensive champagne on butler-carried tray. But you do become aware of its puffed dimensions when you turn it."
