Singer Mariah Carey and the late Marvin Gaye were rumored to be planning a duet of Gaye's "What's Going On" during the 2008 Idol Gives Back charity drive special, but American Idol executive producer Nigel Lythgoe said they could not secure the rights for the performance.
During a conference call on April 9, 2008, Lythgoe said "Unfortunately, it's not [happening]...We couldn’t get the rights to music with Marvin, so we had to cancel it."
