Escambia County is the westernmost county in the U.S. state of Florida. It was named for the Escambia River, whose name in turn comes from a Spanish word for "barter" or "exchange." Escambia County and St. Johns County were Florida's original two counties with the Suwannee River being the boundary between the two.
On July 10, 2009, Melanie Billings and husband Byrd Billings, parents of 12 adopted children, were shot to death in Beulah FL, located within Escambia County.
