Backstory
The Crusades were Roman Catholic campaigns, sanctioned by the Pope, which attempted to reclaim holy lands (usually Jerusalem) from the Muslims. Some of the Crusades, however, were targeted at non-Muslims, such as the Fourth Crusade, which sacked Constantinople and the Fifth Crusade that targeted the Cathars of France. -
