The recent years have been rough for the former pop star. This is a chronicle of her sad and unfortunate downward spiral.

- MTV News: Britney Spears' Downward Spiral: A Tragic Timeline (January 31, 2008)
- January 3, 2004: Spears marries childhood friend Jason Allen Alexander. The marriage lasts a total of 55 hours.
- January 5, 2004: The marriage is annulled.
- June 2004: The pop star performs her last real concert in Dublin, Ireland.
- July 2004: Spears announces her engagement to Kevin Federline.
- September 18, 2004: Spears and Federline are married.
- September 14, 2005: Sean Preston Federline is born.
- February 2006: Photos taken by paparazzi show her driving with her son in her lap.
- September 12, 2006: Jayden James Federline is born.
- November 7, 2006: Spears files for divorce from Federline.
- February 16, 2007: Checks into a drug rehabilitation facility in Antigua for less than 24 hours.
- February 17, 2007: Is famously photographed shaving her hair off with clippers.
- February 20, 2007: Britney checks herself back into a drug rehabilitation facility in Malibu, California.
- February 22, 2007: Spears is photographed using an umbrella to hit a car outside the home of Kevin Federline.
- March 20, 2007: Spears leaves the rehabilitation center.
- May 2, 2007: Spears embarks on a bizarre 'comeback'. The The M+M's Tour lasted six nights. Each night Britney performed a 15 minute lip synched set of her biggest hits.
- September 2007: She is court ordered to undergo random drug and alcohol testings conducted by the court, and also ordered to attend parenting counseling.
- September 9, 2007: Spears gives her underwhelming "comeback" performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas.
- September 18, 2007: Spears is reportedly dropped by her management.
- October 1, 2007: Temporarily looses physical custody of her children to Federline.
- October 3, 2007: Court rules that Federline will gain full custody of the children.
- October 12, 2007: Spears is granted one overnight visit with her kids per week.
- October 15, 2007: Spears is booked and charged with misdemeanor hit-and-run and driving without a license. She was released an hour later.
- October 19, 2007: Spears runs over the foot of a paparazzo.
- October 23, 2007: Court ordered parenting coach submits report stating "she was unable to teach Britney anything" and that "Britney ignores her kids". The report will help determine whether or not she will share 50/50 custody rights with Federline.
- October 23, 2007: Former friends and associates of Britney start a boycott of her upcoming album. A MySpace page titled Be Proactive To Help attracts 860 friends in 24 hours.
- October 24, 2007:Britney met with ex husband Kevin Federline for their first court ordered parenting class.
- October 30, 2007: Britney Spears Blackout is released. The Catholic Church is upset by religious-themed photos contained in the CD booklet.
- December 23, 2007: Wild pre-Christmas weekend during visitation with her children.
- January 2, 2008: Trope and Trope. Britney Spears lawyers quit after she misses another deposition in her custody case.
- January 3, 2008: Britney Spears is taken to the hospital after a stand-off with police. She is placed on a 5150 psychiatric hold.
- January 5, 2008: Dr. Phil visits Britney in the hospital, as a request by her parents.
- January 5, 2005: Britney's visitation with her kids is suspended after she is hospitalized.
- January 7-9, 2008: Britney is spotted in Palm Desert and Mexico with Adnan Ghalib after being released from the hospital.
- January 9, 2008: A restraining order is issued on Britney, reportedly to protect Kevin Federline.
- January 17, 2008: The press begins preparing Britney Spears Obituary, just in case.
- January 17, 2008: After being spotted shopping for pregnancy tests with Adnan Ghalib, Britney is photographed visibly on her period in public.
- January 24, 2008: Spears shows up at an elementary school apparently to pick up someone else's kids. She leaves the school a short time later, alone.
- January 31, 2008: Britney is again hospitalized and placed under a psychiatric hold.
- February 1, 2008: Britney's father, James Spears, is granted temporary conservatorship of her estate, gaining control of decision over her medical treatment and finances. They also obtain a restraining order against manager Sam Lutfi.
- February 6, 2008: Spears is released from the hospital after a 7 day stay. The temporary conservatorship order is extended to her father.
- February 14, 2008: A LA court extends the conservatorship of Britney Spears to her father and brother, Bryan Spears, until a March 10 hearing.
- February 22, 2008: After negotiations with Kevin Federline's lawyers, it is reported that Britney Spears will see her children again soon.
- February 23, 2008: Britney is allow to visit her children for 3 hours, under the supervision of her parents and psychiatrist.
