    Thurmond began his career in politics in the South Carolina State Senate in 1932. From 1947 to 1951, Thurmond served as Governor of South Carolina, and in 1948 ran for President. Thurmond became the Senator for South Carolina in 1956, and in 1964 changed his party affiliation from Democratic to Republican.
