Gouken is a playable character in Street Fighter 4 and can be unlocked in home console versions of the game. Gouken was the mentor of Ryu and Ken, and was supposedly killed by his brother Akuma.

When Gouken and his brother Akuma were young, they were students under the same master. During their teachings, the two brothers differed in their philosophies. Akuma took a darker path, while Gouken's was more spiritual.

When Ryu and Ken were young, they studied under Gouken. Akuma arrived and challenged Gouken to battle, but he was defeated by Gouken. Years later, when Ryu and Ken were 23, they completed their training with Gouken. Akuma showed up again shortly afterwards and, this time, killed Gouken in battle. It's unclear how Gouken is now able to participate in the Street Fighter 4 tournament, since he is supposed to be dead.Street Fighter Wiki: Gouken
