• A stove is a kitchen appliance used to generate a large amount of heat in order to cook food. There are two main sections on a stove, the oven and the stove top. The oven creates a hot environment in order to bake or roast food. The stove top usually has four burners which produce heat and cook by conduction. In gas stoves the stove top burners produce an open flame. Cookware is used to contain the food when using the stove top and bakeware is used to contain the food in the oven.

• Cleaning

  Perhaps one of the most dreaded kitchen chore is cleaning the stove. To avoid a a difficult mess clean the stove often. Make sure that the oven is cool before starting. Open windows or doors to allow for good ventilation. Put on some kitchen gloves to protect your skin from the oven cleaner and scrubber.

  Begin by removing the burner coils and drip pans. Soak the drip pans in soapy water. Spray the surface of the stove top with oven cleaner and allow to sit for the time recommended by the oven cleaner directions. While you are waiting for the oven cleaner to soften the stains scour the drip pans gently but don't use the oven cleaner as it may damage aluminum surfaces. Wipe clean with a rag or sponge if the stain is stubborn scrub with a scouring pad. Wipe clean with water and a clean rag or sponge.

  Lift up the stove top and use the oven cleaner again to clean up anything that may have spilled underneath.

  Open up the oven and remove the grills. Spray the soiled surfaces in the oven with the oven cleaner avoiding the filament and let sit. While you are waiting scrub grill with a scouring pad or wire brush and wipe clean. Scrub to lift out burnt on stains wipe clean with water and a clean rag or sponge.

  Reassemble the stove top and put the grills back in the oven. Use an all-purpose kitchen spray to wash the outer surfaces of the oven. Window cleaner works well for very reflective outer surfaces. If you don't have these cleaners or prefer not to use them mild dish washing liquid works fine as well.
