Stockings

Stockings are women's hosiery that typically stop at the thigh. They are often made of nylon and may have some decorative stitching or edging. Usually worn with a garter belt.

History

Nylon stockings were introduced in 1940 and were immediately popular. Production of nylon stockings and other nylon products was stopped for World War II. In 1945, the war ended and nylon stockings were sold again. The demand was so high that riots broke out in the stores. In the 1960s, with the invention of pantyhose and mini skirts, stocking sales dropped dramatically. They never regained the popularity they once had.

Buying Guide

There is plenty of variety among stockings. You can find stockings in plenty of colors and with many decorative edgings.

Stockings are still considered a classic although they are not as popular as they once were. Usually stocking are worn with a garter belt but there are some that will stay up for the most part. Those that claim to stay up may still slip and might constrict circulation. Garter belts may also be uncomfortable to wear.

Vintage and vintage style stockings have a seam in the back. This classic style is appreciated by some.
