Stigmata

  • Stigmata is a 1999 film directed by Rupert Wainwright. The film follows a woman stricken by true stigmata and an ordained Jesuit priest who investigates miracles for the Vatican. The movie is loosely based on the Gospel of Thomas. It premiered in the number one spot at the box office, earning $18.3 million the first weekend of its release.

    Stigmata stars Patricia Arquette, Gabriel Byrne, Jonathan Pryce, Nia Long and Rade Sherbedgia.

  • The Plot

    Frankie, played by Patricia Arquette, is an athiest Pittsburgh hairdresser who begins to exhibits signs of true stigmata. Father Andrew Kiernan, played by Gabriel Byrne, investigates claims of stigmata. He discovers that Frankie's signs stem from the spirit of Father Paul Alameida.

    Father Alamedia was excommunicated after discovering the lost Gospel which challenged the very foundation of the Catholic church. When a cleric from the Vatican attempts to have Frankie silenced, her and Father Kiernan attempt to hide from those that want to destroy her.
