Drafted by the Panthers in the third round of the 2001 NFL draft, Steve Smith made an immediate impact on the team's punt return game, leading all rookies in net yardage with 1,994. This earned him a starting position at wide receiver in his sophomore season. He finished the 2002 season with 54 receptions, 872 yards and three touchdowns. His break out season was in 2005, following the return from a severe leg injury in 2004. In the '05 campaign he totaled 1,563 yards on 103 receptions and 12 touchdowns, he followed that year with two more 1,000-yard seasons.
